Meet the First-Timers on Our Charts This Week
19-year-old drill rapper and Lil Durk protégé Chuckyy debuts with viral hit "My World," leading a handful of new artists who made their first appearance on a chart this week.
Billboard has more than 200 different weekly charts, covering every genre and radio format — from pop, hip-hop and country, to regional Mexican, Afrobeats and jazz. While established superstars often compete for the top spots and grab the headlines, up-and-coming artists are fighting to just earn a spot anywhere on the charts — a milestone in its own right that can mark the beginning of something big.
Though the coveted No. 1 spot is the biggest achievement of all, and the most visible sign of success, simply debuting on a Billboard chart is a major breakthrough for emerging artists. That’s why Billboard celebrates the "First-Timers" every week. These are the kids that should be on your radar.
This week (on charts dated May 10), 19-year-old drill rapper Chuckyy earns his first-ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with his breakthrough single, “My World.” Released April 24 on Santa Anna Records, the track debuts at No. 79 powered entirely by its streams: 7.4 million earned in the U.S. in its first week of release, according to Luminate. The song also starts at No. 12 on Hot Rap Songs and No. 18 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Chuckyy had never appeared on any charts before this week, much less the Hot 100.
Chuckyy, who hails from the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood of Chicago, has been releasing music on DSPs for two years, but the response to “My World” has been unprecedented for him. So, how did Chuckyy explode onto the Hot 100 without ever having charted before? TikTok was a contributing factor. He first teased the song in an April 16 TikTok video, and since then, it has soundtracked nearly 25,000 clips on the platform to date.
Outside of the hype he built on social media, he’s also benefitted from fellow Chicago rapper Lil Durk, who signed Chuckyy to his Only The Family collective last year. Durk has of course emerged as one of the most successful rappers this decade, charting 98 total songs on the Hot 100 in his career and earning two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, though he has been incarcerated since October on a federal murder-for-hire charge. Just last week, federal prosecutors unveiled a new indictment against him, dropping all reference to lyrics that his lawyers claimed were being unfairly used against him.
Chuckyy joins a lineage of other OTF artists to reach the Hot 100, a list that includes Doodie Lo and the late King Von.
Chuckky isn’t the only artist to chart on Billboard for the first time this week. Take a look at some of the other First-Timers across other charts below:
Lyn Lapid: The pop singer-songwriter and Mercury Records signee debuts for the first time this week with her debut full-length album Buzzkill. The album debuts at No. 26 on the Top Album Sales chart with 3,000 copies sold in its opening week. It also starts at No. 15 on the Vinyl Albums chart, as the majority of those sales were vinyl. The album helps Lapid, 22, also debut at No. 13 on the Emerging Artists chart.
The Paradox: The Atlanta-based pop-punk band scores its first chart entry with their breakthrough song “Do Me Like That.” The track opens at No. 4 on Alternative Digital Song Sales and No. 7 on Rock Digital Song Sales with 1,000 downloads sold in the week ending May 1. The four-piece band has built a social media following by posting viral covers of everything from Blink-182 and Nirvana, to the themes from iCarly and Drake & Josh. Some fans have even dubbed the band “Black-182” online. “Do Me Like That” is an original recording, and two clips of the band performing the song have racked up millions of views on TikTok, helping fuel its chart debut.
Donae’o: The British rapper debuts for the first time thanks to his guest appearance on Zinoleesky’s “Doctor,” which debuts at No. 40 on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart. It’s one of 14 songs by Zinoleesky on the chart this week, nearly the entire tracklist from his new album Gen Z. The set earned 3,000 equivalent album units in its first week, according to Luminate, helping it debut at No. 9 on the World Albums chart. While this earns Donae’o his first chart entry, he’s been releasing music for over two decades. He’s also collaborated with fellow British rappers Young & & Bugsey, Giggs and Ghetts. —Xander Zellner
